How image compression works

This tool draws each uploaded image onto an HTML canvas at your chosen dimensions, then re-encodes it using your browser’s built-in JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF encoder. Lossy formats like JPG, WebP, and AVIF let you trade visual detail for a smaller file by adjusting the quality slider — most photos still look sharp at 70–85% quality. PNG output from this tool is always lossless, so its file size depends on image complexity rather than a quality setting.

Because encoding runs in the canvas rather than reading the file’s raw bytes, EXIF and other metadata is not carried over to the output — the tool corrects visual orientation first so rotated phone photos still display right-side up, but embedded metadata itself is not preserved.

Under the hood, the two levers that matter most are quality and dimensions. Quality controls how aggressively a lossy encoder discards fine detail; dimensions control the raw pixel count the encoder has to work with in the first place. Cutting an image’s width and height in half typically shrinks the file far more than any quality slider alone — which is why the Resize tab exists alongside Compress rather than being an afterthought.

Why compress images before uploading to WordPress

Smaller images mean a faster site.

Large, unoptimized images are one of the most common causes of slow-loading WordPress pages, and page speed affects both visitor experience and how search engines evaluate a page. Compressing an image before you upload it to your media library reduces the file WordPress has to store and serve, which can improve metrics like Largest Contentful Paint. Resizing an image to the dimensions it will actually display at — rather than uploading a full-resolution camera photo — often has an even bigger impact than compression alone.

The same logic applies well beyond WordPress. Email newsletters render faster and are less likely to get clipped by size limits. Slide decks and PDFs stay under attachment caps. Portfolio and photography sites feel snappier on mobile data. Anywhere an image travels over a network before it’s seen, a smaller file means less waiting for the person on the other end.

There’s a generous per-file size ceiling and a batch limit designed to keep the tool responsive, but for typical photos and graphics you’re unlikely to hit either. The practical constraint is your own device’s available memory — very large batches on low-memory devices may process more slowly.

This can happen when a quality setting is too high for a lossy format, or when converting a small, already-optimized file to PNG, which is lossless and doesn’t shrink flat-color images the way JPG or WebP can. Try a lower quality slider or a different output format — the tool will flag it if the result grows.
